Born on August 12, 1867, in Dresden, Germany, of American parents, Edith Hamilton grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana. From a very early age she was an eager student of Greek and Roman literature. She attended Miss Porter╒s School in Farmington, Connecticut, and following her graduation from Bryn Mawr College with an M.A. degree in 1894 she spent a year in 1895╨1896 at the universities of Leipzig and Munich (she was the first woman to attend classes at Munich). In 1896 she returned to the United States and was appointed headmistress of the Bryn Mawr School in Baltimore, a preparatory institution founded 11 years earlier by Mary E. Garrett and others. She remained headmistress for 26 years. In 1922 she retired to devote herself to her classical studies and writing.
Hamilton published a number of articles on aspects of Greek life and art, and in 1930 her first book, The Greek Way, appeared. Vivid and engaging as well as thoroughly scholarly, the book was a critical and popular success. It was followed by The Roman Way, 1932, which was equally well received. Hamilton turned to other sources of tradition in The Prophets of Israel, 1936, and later in Witness to the Truth: Christ and His Interpreters, 1949. Others of her books included Three Greek Plays, translations from Aeschylus and Euripides, 1937, Mythology, 1942, The Great Age of Greek Literature (an expansion of The Greek Way), 1943, Spokesmen for God (an expansion of The Prophets of Israel), 1949, and The Echo of Greece, 1957. While visiting Greece in 1957 at the age of ninety, she was made an honorary citizen of Athens in recognition of her devotion to the ancient ideals of that city. Hamilton died in Washington, D.C., on May 31, 1963.
